Living in a small town has so many benefits. I know that there are many who would disagree, and I would have also as a young person. However, as I’ve grown older I’ve learned to appreciate the level of connection in a small community.
The other day I was having breakfast with my husband at our local diner. It’s the “go to” place in our little town for coffee and conversation. The have a table that we lovingly refer to as the liars table. It’s a large round table and people move in and out of it throughout the day. You can often hear stories being stretched or laughter coming from this table. On this particular morning there was concern around the table though. One of their regulars had been sick and they were worried. One gentleman was walking around the restaurant with a get well card and many were signing it, including us. While I was signing the card, my husband and this gentleman talked about how much they thought of the sick friend and hoped to see him back in the diner soon.
I couldn’t help but reflect on how this is what connection looks like. It’s being part of something. Community. It’s a place where you know you belong. I left that day promising myself to be more mindful of others and how I offer connection.
I would encourage you to consider it as well, especially during this time of social distancing.
